Safety Standards : Older Standards
The law states that child restraints (baby seats, child seats, booster seats and booster cushions) sold in the UK must conform to the United Nations ECE Regulation R44.03 or R44.04. However, child restraints that conform to a British Standard or to an earlier version of R44, may continue to be used. The relevant British Standards are:
| Type of Restraint |
Standard |
| Rearward-facing baby seat |
BS AU 202 or BS AU 202a |
| Forward-facing child seat |
BS 3254 |
| Booster seat |
BS 3254 |
| Booster cushion |
BS 185 |
Carrycot with restraining straps
These provide much less protection than rearward-facing baby seats as they are not designed to withstand impact forces. They can only be used in the rear of a car. |
BS AU 186 or BA AU 186a |
Child restraints that conform to a British Standard will now be several years old. Parents should replace them with newer ones that conform to R44.03 or a later version of this standard.
